A multi-sensory installation that explores the connections between machines and bodies.
The stainless steel structure represents machines and industrialization. Its rigid form embodies the mechanized aspects of modern labor. Within the metal structure, a heater rotates and generates heat, mimicking the heat generated by both machines and human bodies during labor, drawing parallels between industrial processes and bodily exertion.
The effect of industrialization on human labor is especially explored in this installation. The slowly spinning heater symbolizes the relentless, almost impersonal force of industrial machinery. The steady rotation and the heat generated also represent the continuous, unyielding nature of modern labor within mechanized settings. This aspect of the installation embodies the industrialized world's drive for productivity and efficiency, where machines and human labor both work tirelessly to fulfill their designated tasks.
By contrast, the soft, flowing strands of hair represent the organic, human elements. Their gentle movement in response to the heat creates a subtle and almost ethereal movement, reminding us of a human body’s natural rhythms.
Ambiguous flashing images of bodies and metallic elements are projected onto the hair. A fusion of human and machine elements that hints at the broader implications of industrialization on society and the individual is implied through the flashing motifs and a short, sudden sound.
