Hi, I’m Jay! I’m a creative technologist and developer, and founder of Brooklyn-based Dayflower Studio. My background includes an extensive audio practice from mixing to custom plugin programming, as well as interaction design for websites and museums across NYC.
Workshop Recordings
Note: This link might not be available once the final recording is available.
The recordings from Jay's sound design workshop. While the final video is still in the works, these rough recordings should be very helpful for following along with the instructions, practicing, and applying effects to our group projects.
Workshop Objectives
- Audio Implementation in Unity: The workshop will start with the basics of audio and sound implementation in Unity. Participants will learn to create an audio object in a demo scene, using either their own sounds or samples provided by Jay.
- Components and Interactions:It will include a detailed look at Unity's Audio Component (Audio Source, Audio Listener) and how to script audio interactions and utilize physics for sound.
- Advanced Techniques: Jay will explain audio looping, managing sound in a 3D environment, and utilizing tools like Pure Data and Reaper for sound editing. This section will also cover implementing non-diegetic music and basic sound editing techniques to avoid issues like audio clipping or unintended dropouts.
- Practical Application: The workshop will culminate in a hands-on session where students can experience firsthand the impact of sound and music on a scene, highlighting the dramatic difference sound design can make. Likewise, it will come to a close with a full start-to-finish walkthrough of the process of setting up an audio interface, recording sound, editing it, and importing it into Unity.
Project Files:
- The Workshop Unity project file, including all necessary audio samples, code snippets, and a Pure Data integration. For help getting this to open in your Unity editor, check out this video.
- Pure Data, for editing patches on your computer.
- A link to Reaper, the audio editing software we’ll be touching upon briefly.
- A link to Niall Moody’s *black and secret places* Unity project, an incredible example of what can be done with experimental audio in Unity. Not strictly necessary for class, but a ton of fun to mess around with!
- A few of your own audio samples. Can be recorded with your phone, a mic, downloaded from Freesound — anything!
